Rizika
Ice on lakes, rivers and the sea forms and melts unevenly. It is thin near inflows, reeds, bridges and currents, and in spring it can look solid while being honeycombed and rotten underneath. Falling through into cold water is immediately life-threatening: the cold-shock gasp and rapid loss of strength give only minutes to get out.

Treat all early and late-season ice as unsafe. As a rough guide, stay off clear new ice under about 10 cm thick, and remember that snow-covered, layered or spring ice needs much more. Never go alone, carry a pair of ice picks around your neck to pull yourself out, avoid dark patches and inflows, and tell someone your route and return time.
